On the 24th April 2021, we are launching the Global Engineering Network's Insights webinar series on some of the most important sustainability issues of our time. Our Asia and Oceania continental team is hosting a global event to discuss the growing concern of microplastics in our environment and possible solutions to removing them.

The event will be supported by leading organisations including the National University of Singapore, Cukurova University, Turkey, Yildiz Technical University, Turkey and University Malaysia Terengganu.
Microplastics (MPs) are generally defined as plastic particles between 1 µm to 5 mm in size, and have been widely detected in both aquatic and terrestrial environments worldwide. This has raised concerns about MPs potential effects on aquatic organisms. The low degradation rate and small sizes make MPs persistent and easily accessible to various aquatic organisms (from zooplankton to mammals), disturbing the food chain. Although the number of studies in freshwater environments has increased over the last few years, information about MPs in constructed wetlands is still largely limited.
This online event will feature a panel discussion and interactive question and answer sessions with industry experts and early career engineers from many of the sectors crucial to the battle against microplastics pollution.

We will look at the engineering challenges involved in detecting and identifying microplastics and solutions to reduce the levels in our water sources. We'll also ask how early career individuals can get involved in shaping the engineering solutions that are required.
